A Closer Look With…
Jody Roberts — 2004 | Austin
Chief Operating Officer
In your opinion, what makes Capitol Services such a special company?
Capitol Services values work life balance for its employees. We work hard and then go home to our families, friends, and interests outside of the office.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be President of the United States and a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader (in that order ☺).
What’s your go-to food when you are running short of time?
My office is stocked with a giant jar of M&Ms. That is my (extremely healthy) lunch when I am on the run.
What’s the most memorable vacation you’ve ever taken?
My husband and I were struggling to agree on where we should go after I took the bar exam. We ended up closing our eyes, spinning a globe and putting a finger down. It landed in the middle of the ocean . . . but the closest land form was Tahiti – and it was amazing!
If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?
I’m not sure I would want to trade places with anyone. The control freak part of me would be worrying if they were leaving a mess in my house for me to clean up when I got back ☺.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Have children – it’s been a 21 year roller coaster ride.
If you could be a superhero, would it be?
Batman – he has the coolest stuff and a butler.
If you could have dinner with any Nobel Prize winner, who would it be?
Winston Churchill. I just finished watching The Crown and I’m curious if that was an accurate portrayal.
What book have you read recently?
I’m currently reading the Phryne Fisher mystery series. Agatha Christie is my all-time favorite author – I love a good mystery.
What’s the best concert or music festival you’ve ever been to?
The summer after I graduated from high school, I saw two amazing concerts back-to-back. Jimmy Buffet and The Eagles. I’m not sure if it was the music or the feeling of having just graduated, being independent, staying out late with friends, and the exciting promise of college in the fall that made them so special.
What’s your favorite hobby or pastime?
Reading – although lately it feels like my pastime is driving children to various activities.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Austin, Texas, is pretty fantastic but on the days when the traffic is beating me down, I day-dream about living on St. Simon’s Island, Georgia.
What’s your favorite movie or TV show?
My all-time favorite movie is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. I am such a rule follower that I had my mother write me a note for Senior Skip Day so the idea of someone as free as Ferris has always appealed to me.
What’s your favorite sports team?
The University of Texas Longhorns. My closet is full of burnt orange.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I would pick something from Jimmy Buffet. He is the long days of summer, the relaxation of the beach, and idle time on a porch swing bottled into a song.
Who was your inspiration as a kid?
It sounds cliché but it’s true – it was my mother – hands down. I hope my kids are reading this and taking notes ☺.
Kevin Roberts — 2014 | Austin
Chief Executive Officer
In your opinion, what makes Capitol Services such a special company?
It’s being a part of people who really care about their work coming together to provide the best service in the industry. It’s special to meet clients and consistently hear them rave that we are better than the others.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
An astronaut. It’s cliché, but as a kid growing up in the ’60s, it’s what you wanted to be. They are real explorers and heroes.
What’s your go-to food when you are running short of time?
Peanut butter – honey sandwich. Or maybe just plain old peanut butter in a spoon with a glass of milk.
What’s the most memorable vacation you’ve ever taken?
A trip to Spain with my family when our kids were teens. It was both wonderful and stressful. Spain is rich in history with some of the most beautiful medieval architecture. Kids are rich in drama and conflict.
If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?
John F. Kennedy. He faced head-on some of the biggest challenges of the day: communism, racism, and voters’ rights.
What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Racing off-road motorcycles in Enduro and hare scrambles.
If you could be a superhero, would it be?
Without a doubt, I would want to be Spiderman. The evolution of him today, especially in the multi-verse, is cool. And he teams up with the Avengers.
If you could have dinner with any Nobel Prize winner, who would it be?
For me it would be Jimmy Carter. He is not thought of as a particularly good president but he was likely our best diplomatic president and certainly a man of real character.
What book have you read recently?
I’m currently reading Sherman’s Woodticks – a historical account of the 8th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. It’s written by an industry colleague who gave it to me as a gift. I love historical civil war accounts.
What’s the best concert or music festival you’ve ever been to?
By far its opening night of Van Halen’s 1984 tour in Jacksonville, Florida. That’s all I can say about it because the concert was definitely R-rated.
What’s your favorite hobby or pastime?
I love to offshore saltwater fish. I grew up fishing in fresh water but once I caught a large 25# king mackerel off Mexico Beach, Florida, I knew it was saltwater for me.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Seville, Spain. I told my family that when I retire, I’m moving to Seville to drive a horse drawn tour carriage. The food and the Catedral de Sevilla – the largest gothic cathedral ever built – are amazing.
What’s your favorite movie or TV show?
The Big Chill. There were some great movies that came out in the ’80s but this is the best. Great story, great music, great cast! I love movies set in southern culture where a story explores the relationships of friends.
What’s your favorite sports team?
Florida State Seminoles. Go Noles!
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
“Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. “All that you need is in your soul.”
Who was your inspiration as a kid?
My mother’s dad. Granddaddy was a true entrepreneur who taught me integrity, hard work, and discipline – and that I could do anything.
